We accidentally stumbled across this school just driving around looking for another location. Upon entering the school I couldn't believe how much was left behind. The only visible damage inside was from the scrappers tearing out the metal in the hallway ceilings. There were no signs of graffiti and most of the classes looked like they have been untouched.

The current school building was constructed on a triangular site for 1,040 African-American pupils in 1926 and expanded in 1928. It is named in memory of the founder and first president of A&M College at Normal.

In the 1930s jazz bassist Walter Blythe started a band program at Councill, mentoring young musicians including Jo Jones, Nehamiah Stanfield and Jimmy Chappel.

The school has been closed since 2015.
